Viewing Metadata in ArcCatalog 10
You can view and edit metadata for spatial data using ArcCatalog. In version 10, the default view for the metadata includes a title, thumbnail, tags, summary, description and credits (version 9 used to have ALL the metadata parameters available, but these are now hidden in version 10). In order to view metadata follow these steps:
- Open ArcCatalog and select (highlight) a layer from the table of contents
- On the right panel, click on the “Descriptions” tab
View complete FGDC metadata
In order to view the entire list of metadata parameters, you need to enable this through the customize interface.
- From the ArcCatalog file menu, choose Customize -> ArcCatalog Options, and select the “Metadata” tab
- Under “Metadata Style”, choose “ISO 19139 Metadata Implementation Specification” and click OK.
Initially, nothing will look different. You will actually have to select another layer, and then go back and select the old layer to see the additional metadata information. Once you have done this, you should see additional data (scrolling down) for “ArcGIS Metadata” and “FGDC Metadata”. The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) created the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) that has been used in the United States for many years; it is commonly referred to as the FGDC metadata standard. Navigating through the additional metadata allows you to see the entire metadata documentation for the selected dataset.
Editing the metadata is actually a simple process. All you need to do is click on the “Edit” button (under the description tab), and start entering data.
